Weather-wise
The main theme of the trip is weather and climate. Development of the climate now and earlier is outlined, and we discuss the factors that rule the weather in Denmark. We do practical work registering the weather, i.e. with data from the Nature schools own weather station, satellite pictures, clouds etc.
Grades: 7.-10.
Duration: 4 hours
Period: All year
Can we do the trip on our own? No, but you can always work with the weather – it’s always there. Call us for more ideas on
Purpose: To help the students understand the features that create the weather – and that the earths climate is constantly changing due to natural causes. To give students tools to follow the debate about the planets climate – and the change in Danish weather.
Attached to subjects: Geography, physics/chemistry and social sciences
Preparation: It is good for the trip if the students have worked with the features that create weather – and have an idea of the terms global warming or greenhouse effect. It is also good if the trip is the beginning of a course on the weather and climate - but PLEASE tell us if you have started and what with, or if the trip is the beginning of a course. At a minimum, the preparation for the trip is that you ask the students to look for the weather forecast from the day before, and note which terms are included. Remember: Talking about the terms that will be used is always a good way to prepare a trip.
Scenario of the trip: The trip can be varied in both time and contents on request. The standard edition lasts 4 hours. The trip is about both weather and climate, which means that we work with both that day’s weather and making a forecast. The climate part is obviously mostly theory and discussions, but we have a quiz and the option of working with the internet. We usually start out with quite a long presentation with a few discussions and joint experiments with water and air. Then we make a weather forecast, and finally we review and go on the internet for DMI’s weather forecast and other facilities. Teacher’s tasks On the trip itself, to support groups needing help during group work creating a weather forecast.
Ideas for a course of study: Project assignment – the subject of earth’s climate is full of perspective and sidetracks, both near and far. |
