Raadvad Ironman

Paddle, cycle and run through a fun and challenging day in the woods after a presentation on heart rate and circulation. Raadvad Ironman consists of 800 m canoeing, 10 km cycling and ends with a 2 km run in the woods. A couple of students do the trip with data logging equipment that measures the heart rate, so we can study the development of the heart rate during the exertions. After a step-test along the way, you can compare your fitness rating with other classes on the fitness-base on www.netognatur.dk.

NOTE!!! Cycle helmet is required during cycling.

Grades:
7.-10.

Duration: Normally 4 hours.

Period: All year, depending on the weather

Can we do the trip on our own? Yes, you can borrow maps and equipment at the Nature school. Booking required.

Purpose: That the students experience the relationship between intensity and heart rate on their own bodies. To understand the relationship between energy expenditure and the need to eat. To test their fitness level and to use the woods for an active open-air life. To register and compare the students fitness levels on the fitness base on netognatur.dk

Attached to subjects: Physical education, biology or as a part of cross-curricular natural sciences.

Preparation:
The trips fits well into a course in the body, preparations depend on when in the course the trip takes place. The trip can stand alone.

Remember: Students must wear cycle helmets, perhaps a change of clothing – showering is not possible, remember something to drink.

Scenario of the trip: We start with a presentation on heart rate and circulation, which incorporates the students own experiences and shows the relationship between the ability to move and the body’s need for nutrition. The routes are outlined and run through.

The class will be spilt into to teams. Team 1 will start the Ironman, while Team 2 does the Harvard Step test. After the step test the students will enter their results into kondibasen on Netognatur. When the students from Team 1 have finished the Ironman they will do the Harvard step test and vice versa. Finally the class’ results will be published and reviewed using the heart rate curve, basing it on the students who have had their heart rate measured along the way with the data logging equipment.

Teacher’s tasks: To send the students off and keep and eye on time spent

Ideas for a course of study: The trip could be a part of a course on the body, either as an introduction, midway or as a conclusion.

These students might not be on their way to an Ironman – but see how the cycle helmets are worn with a smile.
